What to expect:

Dr. Ghilain is frequently hired by school districts to provide independent educational evaluations (IEE) to students in their schools.

These evaluations are requested in education law matters relating to school districts and petitioners in issues concerning students’ appropriate educational planning, accommodations, or interventions.

As detailed below, these independent evaluations are comprehensive batteries aimed at better understanding a child’s strengths and weaknesses in the context of the background history (e.g., developmental, medical, family, educational, social) and current educational placement.

Through a combination of interviews with appropriate school personnel, parents, and the child, as well as structured tasks (i.e. paper-and-pencil tests, tasks on a tablet or computer), Dr. Ghilain  assesses:

  • Overall Intellectual Functioning
  • Language
  • Visual Perception
  • Attention/Concentration
  • Executive Functioning (planning, organizing, self-monitoring, etc.)
  • Memory
  • Motor Skills
  • Adaptive Functioning (daily independence)
  • Emotional/Behavioral Functioning & Mood
  • Personality
Following the evaluation, Dr. Ghilain provides any appropriate diagnoses, as well as recommendations for home, school, and community-based supports, if needed, to the school district. She is available for ongoing consultation during educational planning meetings or to conduct school observations, as needed.
